some thoughts:
I wanted to give that claustrophobic feeling 
that the player is being surrounded 
without the enemies just homing on the player. 
I got the idea from Pac-Man of 
giving the enemies different movement types. 
The first alien homes on the player 
with its speed incrementing each score 
while the other aliens will follow 
but keep a distance from the player. 
The enemies and rocks surrounding the player 
limits the options for movement 
while the first alien just creeps behind. 
The shield was a perfect powerup 
as it gives room for movement for a brief moment.
